The Problem

Why most Upwork fee calculators show the wrong number.

It's not a flat 20%.

Many tools apply a flat 20% to your project value. Upwork's service fee is actually variable — between 0% and 15%, set when you send the proposal. Most freelancers pay around 10%, so a flat-20% estimate overstates what Upwork really takes.

The fee is set per contract.

Each contract gets its own rate when you submit the proposal, and it stays locked for that contract's life. Different contracts can carry different rates, so your effective rate varies by contract — not by how much you've billed. The calculator tracks each contract's locked rate via the Contract Fee Tracker.

Does the rate change mid-contract?

No. Whatever rate is set when you send the proposal applies to the entire contract — there is no mid-contract boundary to cross. The calculator applies your contract's single locked rate (0–15%) to show your exact fee and true net.

Live Example

Per-contract fee — live example

A $1,000 contract at your agreed 10% rate. Here's what actually happens.

Scenario
Client "Agency Partner"
Contract fee rate 10%
This contract $1,000.00
Fee Breakdown
Item Amount Rate Fee
Contract value $1,000.00 10% $100.00
Effective Rate $1,000.00 10% $100.00
After Tax (25% simple)
Net after Upwork fee $900.00
Income tax (25%) −$225.00
True Net Income $675.00
You keep $0.68 of every $1.00 charged
A flat-20% calculator would claim Upwork takes $200 on this $1,000 contract. At your agreed 10% rate it's $100 — a $100 difference on a single contract. Knowing your real per-contract rate keeps your estimates honest.
